q SCIENTIFIC BODY MEMBER’S COMMENT ON IP 2010

Dr. V. A. Srinivasan (Chair)

Vaccines and Other Biological Products Committee

India is one of the largest producers of human vaccines.  Currently there are fifteen manufacturing units producing human vaccines.  India is in a position to supply vaccines to the requirements of UNICEF and the vaccines are exported to more than 100 countries in the world.  Keeping in view the importance of the vaccines in controlling the diseases, Indian Pharmacopoeia 2010 has incorporated all monographs of pediatric vaccines which are supplied to the National Immunization Programme.  The Pharmacopoeia also added various other vaccines which are used extensively for prophylaxis   in India.

The contribution of Animal Husbandry sector to the National GDP is 4.36%.  The Animal husbandry activities also provide rural employment and also serve a s source of income to the rural poor as the agriculture lands are dwindling.  The IP 2010 has introduced 49 vaccine monographs of which eight monographs are newly introduced. Wherever appropriate, monographs have been upgraded also in the light of the current developments. All these vaccines are used for prophylactic purpose in Animal Husbandry sector.  These monographs will provide the Indian manufacturers with an opportunity to manufacture quality vaccines for Indian market as well as for exporting to various countries in the world.

Drug Nomenclature and Medicinal Agents Committee

The Drug Nomenclature Committee, of which I had the honour to be the chairman, carried out the work of graphic presentation of drug molecules. The structures were drawn keeping in view the right stereochemistry of the chiral drugs. The correctness of the structures was were checked many times and finally got appoved by Dr Nityaanand. Each of the structures was given the systematic chemical name according to the IUPAC. In giving the name the stereochemical notations, wherever applied, were incorporated. Below each structure the chemical formula and mlecular weight of drug molecule were given.
